West Town includes Bucktown, Wicker Park, East Village, and Noble Square and is just west of River North and Lincoln Park, north of West Loop, east of Logan Square.
Chicago Bucktown and Wicker Park History
Once farmland, Bucktown was named for the male goat: Buck. In addition to area farmers, there were wealthy businessmen who originally settled in Wicker Park. These families built their homes bordering Wicker Park and along the streets between Evergreen and Pierce Avenue. Tree-lined Hoyne Avenue came to be known as “Beer Baron Row”, named for the stately and majestic stone mansions of German brewmasters. In 1870 Charles and Joel Wicker purchased 80 acres of land to build up the neighborhood and later donated four of these acres to the city for a park, known as Wicker Park.
Bucktown and Wicker Park Restaurants, Shops, and Attractions
A strong community of local shops like Penelope’s or Chicago Makers Pop Up Shop and restaurants: Club Lucky, Antique Taco, and Beatnik. The 606 Trail is a repurposed abandoned railroad that has been transformed into a recreation trail and a convenient way to walk, run and bike above the traffic among the tree tops.
The housing includes storefront and warehouse loft condominium conversions, workman cottages, 2 flats, townhomes, newer condominiums, and single-family homes. Bucktown s and Wicker Park shared a blurred ‘boundary’ at North Avenue
Commute time is 15 minutes to the loop, 40 minutes to O’Hare and Midway with easy access to northern suburbs via Metra Rail at Clybourn.
